THE 'ALEXANDERS OF WELSHPOOL' SONGS (& related silliness)...
THEY DON'T CUT KEYS: - This song was written by me as a little joke for a friend, Paul Alexander, who works at his family's shop in Welshpool. A long standing joke has been that he's always having to tell customers that they don't cut keys, so I thought a little ditty might get the point across. Using a very cheap little digital camera, I filmed my amateurish effort in the living room at home. Little did we know how quickly the word would spread, and that it would lead to more musical daftness...
FIREWORK FRUSTRATION: - On November 4th, the day before Bonfire Night, Paul messaged me to say (jokingly) whether the B-side to "They Don't Cut Keys" could be "They Don't Sell Fireworks Either". I like a challenge, so again I grabbed my guitar and camera and got to work...
ALEXANDERS SELL ELECTRIC FIRES: - I mentioned to Paul that I was feeling a bit guilty that I'd only been singing about what Alexanders doesn't do. So I had the idea that I could do a list song, and asked whether Paul could provide me with an inventory / stock take from the shop, from which I could come up with some words to a new version of Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire". Paul did much better than that! A couple of weeks later, the fully formed lyrics landed in my inbox. All that was left to do was for me to try and record a good take at home, and make a video. This one got coverage in local papers and on MyWelshpool.com.
ORNAMENTS THAT CHIME: - Clearly riding the crest of a wave, we decided that the only thing to do was come up with an Alexanders of Welshpool Christmas single. Paul put his Santa hat on, and came up with this little belter, based on Cliff Richard's "Mistletoe & Wine".
MAD FRIDAY (MERRY CHRISTMAS GORKS): - The 5th song from Paul and I was another festive effort, this time as a homage to Welshpool on the typically boozy Friday befor Christmas, AKA "Mad Friday". Using local Welshpool slang, and painting a picture of how everybody works their way around the pubs before ending at the nightclub & kebab shop, this was another piece of lyrical genius from Paul Alexander, the Bard of Broad Street!
WOLF FLEECE - in honour of Welshpool Country Music Festival: - This latest instalment (released in July 2015) is a tribute to the essential piece of clothing required to fully enjoy Welshpool's annual Country & Western Music Festival. Hordes of C&W fans, mainly from the Midlands, descend on the town for one weekend every July, and can be seen wearing all sorts of cowboy / red indian regalia... and of course, awesome wolf fleeces!!!
Y TRALLWNG - An ode to Welshpool and all its delights: - This latest instalment (released in March 2019 is another tribute to Welshpool, and is based on George Ezra's 'Shotgun'. Once again, Paul Alexander came up trumps with the lyrics, and the song features my harmonica-playing debut!
